what about the slider? is there any specific way to pull it out or you just pull the slider?

No specific way to do it, just pull it right up. It comes off easy. I just put a black one on mine.
How do I know when to replace the pads in my XL? I just got a second hand XL and although the pads seem ok you have to hit them very hard to get the full level, I usualy record or play with the full level on
